How to Grow Angelica Root

In folklore sent by angels to help mankind ward off disease, angelica root (Angelica archangelcia L.) is an herb used dried to make tea or flavor food. The stems can be eaten raw or boiled, the entire plant is used extensively in herbal medicine and the seeds and roots are used to flavor liqueurs. A biennial, angelica flowers in its second year and should be planted yearly to ensure a steady supply of the herb. Angelica's flowers are umbrella-like, with multiple clusters of small white flowers on a 4- to 6-foot stalk.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant in rich, moist soil with organic compost worked through the top 3 inches. Slightly acidic soil is best; add some peat moss to the soil if you live in an area with alkaline soil.

    • 2

Grow angelica root in a semi-shady location if you live in a hot summer area. In cooler areas, full sun is acceptable. Angelica prefers cooler temperatures and needs protection from direct afternoon sun.

    • 3

Water frequently enough to keep soil moist but not soggy. Direct water to the base of the plant, not onto the leaves, to avoid fungal infection.

    • 4

Wash away aphids or spider mites with a blast of water from a hose.

    • 5

Fertilize in the spring with general-purpose fertilizer.
