How to Grow Olena

Olena is the Hawaiian word for the herb tumeric. Tumeric is a root herb that resembles ginger, but it has a milder flavor. Like ginger, olena is grown from root fingers in cultivated beds. Prepared tumeric is common in Indian cooking, and gives yellow curries their characteristic color. Olena is also a popular ingredient in herbal medicine and in natural clothing dyes. The plant is a perennial and thrives in warm climates.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting site that gets partial to full sun, which is 6 to 8 hours daily. The site should have well-draining soil.

    • 2

Cover the soil with a 2-inch layer of organic compost or humus in spring, after the last frost. Till the compost into the soil at a depth of 18 inches. Remove any rocks you find in the soil, and break up clumps with your hands.

    • 3

Select olena fingers that are plump and free of mold. Plant the fingers in trenches 6 to 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches deep. Cover the fingers with soil and water until the soil settles. Space the fingers 18 to 24 inches apart.

Cover the bed with a 2-inch layer of organic mulch. Continue watering whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. The plants should be ready for harvest when the leaves brown in the late fall or early winter.
