How to Grow Germander

Germander is a perennial herb that produces pink or violet flowers. Germander makes an ideal decorative plant for an herb garden or as a border plant. Sun-loving and hardy, germander grows well in almost all well-drained soil types. Start germander seeds indoors four to six weeks before the last frost and transplant them outdoors to produce the best plants. With the proper techniques, you can grow colorful and healthy germander plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pot or container with seed starter mix. Place a germander seed on the surface of the soil and press it down lightly. Water the seed regularly to keep the soil moist. Keep the pot indoors until the last frost.

    • 2

Prepare the soil in a sunny or partially sunny outdoor area. Test the soil pH using a soil testing kit. Make sure the soil has a pH of 6.6 to 7.5. Use lime to raise the pH or fertilizer containing aluminum sulfate to lower it. Mix the amendments thoroughly into the soil with a hoe or gardening claw.

    • 3

Dig a hole with a spade that is deep enough to cover the roots and base of the germander seedling. Space holes 10 inches apart for each plant. Remove the plant from the pot or container and carefully place it in the hole. Pack soil around the plant base.

    • 4

Fertilize the plants with an all-purpose fertilizer and water them if the soil becomes dry. Avoid over-watering.
