What Is the Phyllanthus Niruri?

The Phyllanthus niruri is a rainy season weed that is often used by herbalists for medicinal purposes. (see ref 1 graf This weed is frustrating for farmers because it grows not only in wastelands and lawns but cultivated fields as well. It has hepatoprotective properties and is applicable in Unani and Ayurvedic medicines.
  1. Identifying Phyllanthus Niruri

    • The Phyllanthus niruri weed grows to almost 2 feet in height. It has an angular stem shape with oblong leaves that grow in sets of two that alternate along the stem. This weed is an annual and has yellow blooms and small, round fruit that is ribbed on the backside. The tiny, green fruit contains many seed that grow beneath the leaves.     Beneficial Parts of the Plant

    • The fruit of this weed is useful in treating skin irritations and sores. (see ref 1 graf 4) Juice from the fruit may help skin wounds.
