Grape Vines That Can Be Grown Indoors in the United States

Grapevines are rustic summertime plants, and they grow quite large in outdoor plantings. Keep them smaller and more contained in indoor plantings with rich soil, large pots, stakes and the right location. Maintain the grapevines for years for a continued fruit harvest.
  1. Grapevines in the United States

    • Grapevines grow throughout the country in different cultivars. Even cold areas like U.S. Department of Agriculture Growing Zone 5 can support area-specific grape cultivars. Gardeners who want to grow sensitive cultivars in cold zones, though, must do so inside for protection. The University of Vermont Extension recommends Canadice, Interlaken, Early Muscat, Seyval and Swenson Red grapevines for efficient potted growing.

    Pots

    • Give indoor grapevines large, heavy pots with drainage holes for balance and space. The Purdue University Department of Horticulture notes that grapes grow and survive most successfully with deep, strong root systems. The University of Vermont Extension recommends 15- to 20-gallon pots for indoor grapes. Always use pots with drainage holes to keep grapes from sitting in water at any time.

    Potting Soil

    • Grapevines require loose consistency and rich nutrition in their soil, and do best with high-quality soil in potting situations. The University of Vermont Extension recommends potting grapes in a mix of organic compost, peat moss and bagged top- or garden soil. Don't use soil from the outdoor garden as it may bring weeds and pests into the potting situation.

    Site and Maintenance

    • Keep the grapevines in areas with full natural or artificial light all day. Don't put grapes near heaters during winter, as foliage and wood dries out with hot air. Give each grapevine a stake or trellis for growing and climbing. Water potted grapes with 2 inches of water every week and feed them in spring with 10-10-10 fertilizer. Prune grapevines in early spring as well to control growth and encourage fruit production.
