How to Build a Grapevine Lattice

Grapevines grow in hundreds of varieties and cultivars, with different sizes, fruits and hardiness levels. The vines always need specific conditions for growing, blooming and fruit production. Plant them in sunny sites with good drainage and crumbly soil, then provide a structure for climbing. Support gets the vines off the ground and promotes fuller, healthier fruit growth. If you're growing grapevines on a wall, use a homemade lattice for better coverage.

  • 5- to 7-gallon planters

Instructions

    • 1

Mix cement in 5- to 7-gallon decorative pots or planters for decorative, pleasing lattice supports. Prepare two pots for single or double grapevines. Prepare a third pot if you want to stretch the lattice to 20 feet or longer. Fill the pots three-quarters full of dry cement and add water until the cement reaches an oatmeal-like consistency. Stir thoroughly.

    • 2

Push 6- to 8-foot stakes into the pots and hold them straight until the cement dries. Use quick-dry cement. Move the established stakes and their pots to the ends of the grapevine row and place them against the wall or 4 inches behind the row. If you've made a third stake, place it at the center of the row on this same line.

Wrap one end of a length of trellis netting around the first stake, leaving a foot of space between the bottom of the netting and the ground. Wrap the netting around the stake once, then secure the ends with cord ties. Pull the netting to the next stake and wrap it around the stake once. If this is a central stake, move on to the final stake in the row. When you get to the end stake, wrap the netting around once and secure.

Run a length of 8- to 11-gauge wire from the first post to the last, at the top of the netting. Secure the wire to the first post with a clip and thread it through the loops of netting until you reach the final stake. This step gives the net lattice more security. Cut and clip the wire at the last stake.
