How to String Grape Wires

Planting a new grape vineyard can be a rewarding experience, but the framework for supporting the grape vines needs to be adequately constructed. This framework is referred to as a trellis. Trellises should be carefully planned, built and wired before your new grape cuttings arrive. When stringing your grape wires, the most important thing to remember is that they must be strong enough to hold up buckets of heavy, ripe fruit through all types of weather.

Things You'll Need

  • 12 1/2 gauge high tensile galvanized steel wire
  • Crimping sleeves
  • Wire cutters
  • 2-inch fence staples

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the wire around the first end post of the first row at a height of approximately 40 inches from the ground. Crimp the end of the wire to the wire length on the other side to form a closed loop around the post. Staple the wire to the first post at the 40-inch height using the hammer and two staples driven in at a 45-degree angle to the post.

    • 2

Extend the wire about 2 feet, and then cut it using the wire cutters. Thread it through the hole on the end of the fence strainer and crimp it to form a 2-inch loop.

    • 3

On the other end post of the same row, loop and secure the wire around the post at a height of 40 inches using the same process.

    • 4

Continue along the row toward the wire strainer, attaching the wire with two staples per post, 40 inches from the ground, driven at a 45-degree angle to each post.

    • 5

Cut the wire when you reach the wire strainer, leaving about 2 inches of overhang. Thread the wire through the rotating side of the wire strainer, and tighten the tension of the wire.

Repeat the process at heights of 52 inches and 64 inches from the ground along the same row. Use the same process for additional rows.
