How to Cut Grapevines for Containers

For 8,000 years, people have succeeded in growing grapes. You can replicate a particular favorite by taking a small start off an existing plant -- even if you don't have a good-sized garden for a rambling vine. The cut grapevine can be planted in a container and placed on a sunny porch or windowsill. Grapes require pollination to produce fruit, though, so indoor grapevine containers likely will have only tangles of bushy green leaves.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a start for your grapevine container from an established vine. The cane should be about 12 inches long and include four buds.

    • 2

Prepare your container. Place a layer of pebbles in the bottom of the container for drainage. Add enough dirt to fill the pot about halfway. Grapevines generally can be established in most types of soils.

    • 3

Plant your grape cane so the end you cut from the vine is down in the dirt. Place the cane so only one of the buds will be above the final dirt line, which will be about 1/2 inch from the top of the rim.

Add dirt to the pot to finish the planting. Water the planted vine immediately to ease its transition. The plant will be established within six weeks.
