How to Mulch Around Newly Planted Grape Vines

Grape vines need plenty of moisture, warmth and nutrition. One way to keep them healthy is to provide mulch. Mulch from grass or wood can keep moisture in the ground and provide additional nutrition as it decomposes. Organic and inorganic mulch can also keep soil and water from splashing up onto grape leaves and fruit, causing fungus or other diseases.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the soil around your grape vines. Clear the area of weeds, rocks and sticks.

    • 2

Water the soil generously. The mulch will hold the moisture in, which will help thirsty grape vines to grow.

    • 3

Spread organic mulch (dry leaves, straw, grass clippings or wood chips) around your grape vines. Leave a circle an inch or two in diameter around the base of the vines. The mulch should be several inches thick, to keep the soil warm and eliminate competing weeds and grass.
