When to Plant Red Globe Grape Seeds

Red Globe grape seeds can be grown into fruit-producing vines; however, the task can be challenging. Before planting, Red Globe grape seeds and other types of grapes must go through a process called stratification to ensure successful germination Growing from seeds can take anywhere from one to three years before vines successfully emerge.
  1. Items Needed

    • Gather Red Globe grape seeds, a pair of sharp kitchen shears and a heating pad. Buy a small bag of peat moss, a thermometer, roll of paper towel and two small planter flats. Purchase a bag of potting soil and medium-sized planter pots for germinated seeds. Planter pots can be purchased after germination so you know the exact number that is needed.

    Stratification

    • Rinse Red Globe grape seeds and lightly pat them dry with paper towels to remove any excess debris and prevent fungus growth. Fill each slot in the small planter flat with peat moss and dig small holes that are about an inch deep. Put one Red Globe grape seed in each planter slot. Cover each grape seed with peat moss and lightly pat down. Place the planter flat in the refrigerator and set the thermometer nearby. Make sure the temperature inside your refrigerator is between 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave the grape seeds inside the refrigerator for at least three months.

    Plant Seeds

    • Remove the grape seeds from the refrigerator. Fill the second planter flat with potting soil. Dig small holes in each planter flat slot that are an inch in depth. Remove seeds from the planter that was used for stratification and place one in each slot of the new planter, then cover with potting soil. Mist each slot daily so that the soil is damp but not soggy. Place the planter flat in a sunny area in your home during the day. The seeds should receive at least six hours of sunlight daily. At night, place the heating pad under the planter. Use the lowest setting on the heating pad so that it does not become too hot, only warm. Wait for germination of your Red Globe grape seeds within a month.

    Transplant Germinated Seeds

    • Place germinated Red Globe grapes into medium-sized pots filled with potting soil to ensure successful plants. Dig holes that are 4 to 5 inches deep. Lightly remove the root ball of each grape plant from the planter slots. Use kitchen shears to cut away the plastic that holds each plant to prevent damage to crops. Place one germinated plant into a pot, cover with potting soil and lightly pat down. Repeat for each germinated seed. Water generously for the first few weeks but do not let soil become soggy. Leave in the pots for the first year before transplanting outside.
