How to Prune Valiant Grape Vines

Grapes are grown around the world as both a fruit crop and a wine crop. Although many grapes are perceived as difficult to grow, these vines actually just need specific care to thrive. Some grape vines are more suited to home growing than others, such as valiant grapes, a particularly hardy strain of table grape. These grapes are good for eating and jam making. Like all grape vines, the valiant can grow to be out of control, and need some specific care. Prune the vines to keep them healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Train the valiant grape vine by eliminating any weak shoots. Immediately prune off any secondary shoots or suckers growing from the base of the main cane of your vines. These suckers can "suck" energy from the plant, and won't necessarily add healthy foliage or fruit to your harvest.

    • 2

Prune the body of the vine. Grape vines should be trained to a trellis system of stakes and wire for successful growing. Remove any shoots that are growing down between the wires, to encourage the healthy vines growing along the wires. Cut the shoots at their base, near the main stem. Be careful not to damage the main stem while you're pruning.

    • 3

Clean up your grape vines in the fall by pruning away any dead, damaged or weak foliage. This will allow the vine to put all its energy into maintaining the healthy vines over the winter. Never cut the main stems or canes, as this will damage your valiant grapes.
