Find a landscape suited for grapes. Try to keep your planting site away from the woods, or your vines may be easily infested with insects. A slope or side of a building will suit grapes well. Valleys and lowlands are not good for grapes because the soil is too cool for grapes to flourish.

Examine the landscape for the correct weather environment. Grapes thrive in full sun where they are protected from most winds. South-facing slopes and buildings get the most sun and are most suited for grapes.

Test the soil with a soil test kit for water retention, pH and nutrients. Grapes like well-drained but moist soil and does best in sandy loam soil with a pH between 5.3 and 6.0. They will grow in most types of soil as long as it is never waterlogged.
