How to Build a Support for Grape Vines

Grape cultivation dates back to Roman times, when ancient Romans grew grapes for wine. Grape varieties are grown throughout the world. Although some grapes have gained a reputation for being "difficult," they actually just need specific growing environments to succeed. Grapes grow on long, unruly vines that must be kept off the ground for protection and circulation. To grow grapes effectively, use a trellis or wire system to train them.

  • Wire (50 feet of 8- or 11-gauge smooth wire)

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Dig three holes, 3 feet deep, with approximately 8 feet of space between each hole. These holes will hold the posts for a trellis or wire system.

    • 2

Sink the poles into the holes and seal them with cement for bracing. The posts should be buried up to 3 feet deep, with 5 feet remaining above the ground.

    • 3

Stretch the wire between the posts. Wrap it securely around each post once to secure it. You can put one to two wires in your system. If you use two, put the top wire at the top of the posts, and the bottom wire 3 feet below it.

    • 4

Prune your newly planted grape vines. Cut each cane, or stem, down to 6 to 10 inches. Leave only two or three buds on each cane. These buds will sprout new shoots.

    • 5

Select the healthiest shoot on each cane and cut away any others. Use a tie to secure that shoot to a training stake. If the shoot is long enough to reach one of your wires or part of your trellis, tie the shoot to that part of the structure.

    • 6

Allow the shoot to grow along the wire or trellis.
