How to Plant Grape Vine Cuttings

Grape vines entwined on a trellis make an enchanting addition to any property. Grape vines are low maintenance and propagate from cuttings. The two types of grape vine cuttings are dormant (hardwood) and green (new growth) cuttings. Dormant cuttings grow quickly and can produce a small amount of grapes the next season. Plant grape vine cuttings while the parent plant is still dormant and the weather is getting warm.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a section of vine from a healthy, established grape vine that is dormant. The cutting should be three nodes, or buds, long. A node is the bump where a leaf or a fruit bearing shoot will develop

    • 2

Coat the cut end of the vine with a commercial rooting hormone. Rooting hormone can be found at your local garden center.

    • 3

Plant the cutting by placing it in an equal mixture of potting soil and sand. Place the cutting in the soil mixture with the second bud from the top at the soil level. Plant the cuttings as soon after cutting as possible.

    • 4

Water the cutting completely and keep the soil moist. This will enable the cutting to develop a root system.

    • 5

Place the cutting in the indirect sunlight for most of the day. Roots will establish faster if the plant is moist, warm and not in direct sunlight.

    • 6

Move the plants outside when they have grown roots. The cuttings will start growing when the roots have been established. New plants should not be placed in direct sunlight. When the plants have spent a few weeks adjusting in the outside environment, they can be planted in their permanent spot.
