How to Build Grape Vine Trellises

Grapes have been eaten since prehistoric times when wild grapes grew sprawled over hillsides. As men cultivated grapes, they began to tie them to trellises in order to increase air flow and grape production. Today, commercial grape growers train grape vines to grow on fence-like trellises. Some farmers also plant wild muscadines so that they will grow in fence rows and produce grapes for jelly. Constructing a grape trellis is similar to constructing a wire fence.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the location for your end posts by driving stakes into the ground at the location. Stretch string between the stakes to use as a guide for setting the posts of your trellis.

    • 2

Drive T posts one-third of the way into the ground spaced 8 feet apart. You will plant a grape vine at the location of each T post.

    • 3

Dig a hole for each end post that is 2 1/2 feet deep. Place each post in the hole and brace it upright with extra T posts. Fill in the hole around the end posts with dirt.

    • 4

Drive a T post into the ground on the other side of the end post to brace the end posts. The brace T posts should be slanted away from the trellis at a 45 degree angle.

    • 5

Stretch fencing wire between the fence posts at 2 feet off the ground. Stretch a second wire between the posts at 4 feet off the ground. Secure each wire to the T posts with fencing fasteners.

    • 6

Secure the wire to the wooden end posts by wrapping the wire twice around the post. Wrap the loose end of the wire around the stretched wire twice.

    • 7

Brace the end posts by twisting one end of a length of wire twice around the top of the end post. Twist the ends of the wire twice. Run the long end of the wire down to the bottom of the brace post and twist the wire twice around the brace post. Twist the loose end of the wire twice around the stretched end of the wire.
