The Best Time to Plant Grape Cuttings

Grape cuttings taken in the spring or late fall root well in a humid environment. Once the cuttings have established a strong root system, they can be moved outdoors to harden off.
  1. Time Frame

    • Before the first hard frost or after the last frost in the spring, move the grape cuttings into an area of the garden where they will receive sunlight but still be protected from the elements. Do not put the cuttings in direct sunlight.

    Size

    • When you plant the grapevines in the vineyard, the size of the grape cutting does not matter. The smallest vine grows vigorously during the warm season and will establish a good root system once it is in the ground.

    Temperature

    • For spring grape cuttings, plant them in the vineyard after the cuttings have been hardened off. Water the new grapevines well to keep them growing strong until the first frost. Mulch with organic matter to protect the young vines from the cold. Fall cuttings should be grown out until the spring, in a protected area or even inside. Plant the grape cuttings in the vineyard after the last frost. Keep the new grape vines watered well through the summer so the vines do not suffer any stress. Mulch the first winter to protect the new grape vines from the cold.
