Purchase a rooted seedless grapevine cutting from a local grower, farmer's market, garden center or nursery. Look for healthy, hearty cuttings with lots of green foliage and no signs of disease or discoloration.
Prepare the planting area. Choose an area that gets lots of full sunlight with well-drained soil. Dig a hole1 foot deep and 1 foot wide. If planting multiple vines, space each plant about 6 to 8 feet apart. Drop a cup of bone meal and a shovelful of compost into the hole.
Fill in the hole with soil so that the point just above the roots on the cutting will be at ground level. Place the cutting in the hole and, while holding the cutting upright, fill in the rest of the hole with soil. Pat the soil down by hand or with a spade to drive out air pockets.
Water the planting area until the soil is just moist. Drive a stake or place a trellis near the vine cutting so the plant can climb as it matures. Tie the cutting to the stake or trellis, using a bit of garden twine.
Water the planting area once a week to keep the soil moist until the vine is established. Once the vine starts producing grapes, resume weekly watering. Add a shovelful of compost to the soil surrounding each vine once a year to keep the plants healthy.
