Regardless of type of grape grown, the trellis structure helps gardeners maximize space while providing support for the plant's vining canes. The trellis also improves air circulation around canes and foliage, and proper spacing ensures excellent exposure to sunlight.
If you grow multiple rows of grapevines on trellises, space the rows 10 to 15 feet apart, according to "Sunset Western Garden Book." Typically the trellis structure is about 6 feet tall, with two horizontal tiers/wires at the 36-inch and 55- to 60-inch height above the ground.
Smaller-growing grapevines grow well with reduced trellis size and spacing. More vigorous vines need ample space and light to reach fullest potential. Additional posts may be necessary in trellis structures 15 to 20 feet long to ensure heavy, fruit-laden vines do not sag or flop onto the ground.
