Reasons for Yellow Grass in Turf Areas

Turf is prone to a number of cultural and pathogenic disorders that lead to the development of yellow areas on grass. Knowledge of potential problems is the first step toward effective management. Poorly growing grass is more susceptible to disease and pest infestation, according to the North Dakota State University Extension.
  1. Nutrient Deficiencies

    • The deficiency of nutrients such as nitrogen causes turf grass to start turning yellow. Grass growing in alkaline soil is susceptible to an iron deficiency characterized by the appearance of bleached and yellow patches.

    Fungal Diseases

    • Turf grasses infected with certain fungi results in yellowing areas. For instance, the fusarium patch fungus causes yellow patches. Sclerotnia dollar spot is a fungus that produces circular yellow patches.

    Bacterial Diseases

    • Certain bacterial diseases result in yellow grass. One such disease is rust, which turns grass blades yellow and results powdery spores. Nitrogen-deficient grass is more prone to the disease.
