Rust is among the potential diseases of zoysiagrass. The disease is caused by Puccinia spp. and is more prevalent in humid temperatures of 70 to 95 degrees F. Inadequately fertilized and irrigated lawns are more prone to the disease.
Infected grass takes on a yellow to reddish-orange look as the fungal spores break through the blade surface. A dry powder is seen in the air when lawns are disturbed or mowed. Elongated yellow- to orange-shaded pustules are visible on blades. With disease progression, grass turns entirely yellow and dies. Infected lawns are highly susceptible to winter damage.
Fertilize lawns with adequate levels of nitrogen. Choose disease-resistant zoysiagrass cultivars. Improve irrigation and mowing of grass. Avoid watering during late afternoon or evening as this does not allow blades to dry. Dethatch lawns regularly. Fungicides are not required for rust control.
