Grape Growing in Oklahoma

Grapes have a long and colorful history with mankind, and are popular in both home and commercial growing situations. These fruits grow well in Oklahoma's United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones, 6 and 7, which provide long, warm summers.
  1. Varieties

    • According to the Oklahoma State Cooperative Extension Service, grapes grow successfully throughout Oklahoma. The cooperative extension recommends bunch grapes for the western side of the state and muscadine grapes for all but the northern reaches of the state.

    Planting

    • Grape planting and maintenance should always take place in spring, before the plants begin to wake and grow. In Oklahoma, spring is dictated by the last frost dates, which may fall from mid-April to early May, depending on region. The Oklahoma State Cooperative Extension service recommends planting grapes a month before this date, from February 1 to March 20.

    Location

    • Grapes require bright sun for eight hours every day, with protection from wind and consistent, complete drainage. Gardeners should always plant their grapes in sites that satisfy these demands.

    Soil

    • One of the best ways to ensure good drainage for grapes is to plant them in loose, quick-draining soil. Gardeners should use a combination of quick-draining soil, organic compost and porous material like gravel when planting their grapes. Gardeners whose gardens don't drain well may consider raised beds for their grapevines.
