Wilting Leaves on Green Bean Plants

Beans are a warm-season vegetable and the second most popular in home gardens after tomatoes, as cited by the University of Illinois Extension. Beans either grow as shrublike plants referred to as bush beans or as vining plants called pole beans. A viral disease causes bean foliage to start wilting.
  1. Identification

    • Green bean plants are susceptible to the curly top viral disease transmitted by the beet leafhopper. The disease infects a wide range of weeds and vegetables, including tomatoes.

    Damage

    • Initial symptoms of disease include wilting foliage with distinct puckering and down cupping. Leaves assume a thick and brittle texture and get darker colored. The virus infects the intermodal tissues of plants, or the areas between the stem joints. Plants are consequently extremely stunted and short. Young plants die rapidly. Infected plants produce few and stunted pods.

    Control

    • Using resistant varieties of beans is among the best management practices as there is no cure for infected plants. Attempts to control insect vector with pesticides are also not successful.
