Where to Plant Grape Vines in Ohio

Grapes are successful crops in home gardens worldwide and may last for over 50 years, given the right care. In Ohio's United States Department of Agriculture growing zones 5 and 6, where summer weather lasts four to six months, gardeners must choose the right spots for their grapes and plant the right cultivars for success.

  1. Planting Season

    • Grapes require an early spring planting to give them a full summer for growing. In Ohio, spring arrives from mid-April to mid-May, depending on location.

    Site

    • Grapes require full sun, good air circulation, quick drainage and plenty of space. Any site should receive at least eight hours of sun every day, drain quickly and provide 8 to 12 feet of space for each grapevine. South-facing slopes are ideal for grapevines, as they ensure drainage, circulation and sunlight all day.

    Cultivars

    • Ohio's summers are shorter than many other areas of the country, and the state features colder winters than zones 8 to 11. Ohio gardeners should choose Ohio-friendly grape cultivars like Canadice, Reuben, Catawba, DeChaunac or Niagara for growing success.
