Use the Kniffen design in regions with minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above. This trellis design consists of two wires strung tightly between two poles. The upper wire is heavier gauge (No. 9) than the lower wire (No. 10). The bottom wire is 30 inches above ground and the upper wire 24 inches above that.
For areas where winter temperatures drop below minus 30-degrees Fahrenheit, the modified Chautaugua style trellis works best. This style protects the low-growing trunks from harsh winter damage. Three wires are strung between two posts with the lowest being 12 inches from the ground. The next two wires are at 16-inch intervals.
Use durable weather treated 4-inch poles when building a trellis. These poles are under enormous pressure as the grape plants grow. Bury 8-foot posts at least 2 feet into the ground to help with trellis stability. Place a middle vertical post every 24 feet for increased support.
