The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station lists carbaryl, permethrin and cyfluthrin as among the effective insecticides for controlling lawn ticks. The chemicals are available under several trade names.
Carbaryl products come in the form of dust, granules, suspension and oil. Permethrin insecticides come in a ready-to-spray form. The broad-spectrum insecticide resembles the naturally occurring chemicals with insecticidal properties found in chrysanthemums. Cyfluthrin is available in the form of wettable powder, granules, liquid and emulsifiable concentrates. The chemical also helps control structural pests such as termites.
Carbaryl effectively controls more than 100 types of insects. The chemical works through ingestion or by direct contact with pests. Permethrins work on targeted pests by paralyzing the nervous system of insects upon ingestion. Cyfluthrin also kills targeted pests through direct contact or ingestion.
