When to Replant Dogwood Trees

Dogwood trees are widely used as ornamental plantings for their spring-blooming white, pink or red flowers. The trees grow about 20 to 30 feet tall and produce red fruit in the fall. Dogwood trees transplanted or replanted at the appropriate time adapt to new sites more rapidly.
  1. Time

    • The best time to replant dogwood trees from the woods is during fall and winter, as cited by the North Carolina State University Extension. If you are using container-grown trees, you can replant these any time of the year.

    Method

    • Plant the trees at the same depth at which they were growing in the last site or in the container. Irrigate the tree well after planting and use pine needle or pine bark mulch to keep the roots cool. Water the trees regularly through the first growing season, making sure the soil around the tree is consistently moist but not wet.

    Soil

    • Dogwood trees prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH of about 5.5. Plant in well-drained soil and amend with organic matter. Apply fertilizer during April or May when the new foliage is starting to grow. Dogwood trees do not have a very high requirement for fertilizer.
