Oklahoma lawns are prone to infestation from a variety of weeds. These include dandelion and henbit.
Henbit is an annual or biennial, broadleaf weed with a mature height of about 1 ½ feet, square stems and 1 inch long, hairy, egg shaped foliage. The red to purple shaded flower clusters appear from March to August. Dandelion is a perennial broadleaf weed with distinct bright yellow, 1 ¼-inch flowers that bloom throughout the year in milder weather. The foliage has serrated edges and grows in clusters at plant base.
The University of California Extension lists the use of isoxaben, 2,4-D, MCPA and triclopyr for the control of dandelion in lawns. Use MCPP, 2, 4-D or dicamba to control the growth of henbits in lawns.
