Planting Guide for Spacing Grapes

Planting grapes requires spacing the vines correctly. If left too close together, grape vines will have to compete with one another for light, water and food, weakening all of the plants.
  1. Spacing Plants

    • Individual grape vine plants should be spaced around 6 to 8 feet apart when placed on an arbor or other structure that supports their vines. This gives each plant enough room to grow to its maturity without interference from other plants.

    Spacing Rows

    • Rows of grape vines should be spaced at least 8 feet apart. Spacing rows 8 to 12 feet apart allows the grape vines to extend their root systems deep and wide into the soil, giving them the nutrients they need to continue growing.

    Benefits

    • Proper spacing of grape vines promotes healthy growth of the grapes and the plants. Additionally, plants that do become infected with a pest or disease can be treated more easily if they are not crowded; adequate spacing also limits the spread of pests and disease.
