What Is a Good Shrub to Hide an Electrical Box?

Electrical boxes are necessary features on a house but often come across as unsightly and unattractive. In "Your House, Your Garden," Gordon Hayward and Richard Felber recommend using upright-growing, evergreen or deciduous shrubs to cover electrical boxes. A number of shrubs work well for the purpose.
  1. Identification

    • Gardenia (Gardenia augusta) is among the many shrubs that you can use for covering unattractive electrical boxes. The shrub is a native of Taiwan, Japan and China and also referred to as cape jasmine.

    Description

    • The shrub has a mature height of 6 to 8 feet with an equal spread. The large, white, waxy flowers are fragrant and bloom for an extended period starting from the middle of spring to early summer. The large, leathery foliage is dark green in color.

    Cultural Conditions

    • Grow gardenia in a fertile, moist and preferably acidic soil with good drainage. The shrub is hardy in USDA zones 8 to 10 and grows best in areas of full sun to partial shade. You can propagate the shrub easily with cuttings that root in moist, warm soil.
