When to Fertilize a Grape Arbor

Grapes prefer acidic soil with a pH of between 5 and 5.5. How much fertilizer they need, and when they need it, depends on how old the vines are and what kind of soil they're growing in. Test the soil to see what nutrients your vines require.
  1. First Year

    • Horticulturists don't agree on whether young vines should be fertilized. According to Arizona Cooperative Extension, you shouldn't fertilize grapevines during the first year because the roots burn easily. However, Ohio State University Extension recommends applying 8 oz. of 10-10-10 fertilizer to each vine, seven days after the vines are planted.

    Second Year

    • The University of Missouri recommends adding 1 cup of fertilizer to each plant when the buds swell. However, Ohio State University Extension says each vine should receive 1 lb. of 10-10-10 fertilizer about 30 days before new growth starts.

    Third Year

    • Beginning in the third year, and every year after, each vine should receive 1 1/2 lbs. of fertilizer in the spring, about 30 days before new growth starts, according to Ohio State University Extension. University of Missouri Extension recommends adding 1 to 1 1/2 cups of fertilizer to each vine when the buds swell. Gardeners should use their own judgment when deciding how much to fertilize. Vines should be moderately fertile without showing too much or too little growth.
