Roundup on Crabgrass

Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is a summer annual weed native to Europe that is among the most troublesome lawn weeds. Herbicidal control option for crabgrass includes the use of Roundup, a trade name for the chemical glyphosate.
  1. Description

    • Roundup is a non-selective herbicide that is effective for the control of many annual and perennial plants, including sedges, woody plants and grasses like crabgrass. The general-use herbicide can also be used in combination with other weed-control chemicals.

    Method of Use

    • For crabgrass control, Steve Rackliffe of the University of Connecticut Extension recommends applying Roundup to the entire area where crabgrass is growing. Wait seven to 10 days for results to be evident and remove dead weeds. If crabgrass was growing in a lawn area, overseed with desirable grass species after removing debris.

    Properties

    • Roundup is absorbed readily in most soils, especially those rich in organic content. The chemical binds tightly to soil and does not transfer readily with rain or water. When applied to weeds, the broad-spectrum chemical translocates to all plant areas including roots.
