Spacing for Grape Plants

Individual grapevines need a certain amount of space to themselves to avoid fungal disease. Proper separation also prevents the plants from competing with one another for water and nutrients. Adequate space is also necessary for you to weed, feed and harvest the vines without injuring them. Nursery grape seedlings come with a label that lists the space that that particular cultivar needs, among other cultivation details. Following some general guidelines also leads to a healthy vineyard.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant grapevines 6 to 10 feet from buildings to prevent the roots from damaging the foundation.

    • 2

Grow grapevines in rows 6 to 12 feet apart. Six feet of distance allows for adequate air circulation and sun exposure. Increase the spacing if you plan to cultivate between two rows mechanically. Allow enough maneuvering room to minimize the risk that your equipment will accidentally injure the vines.

    • 3

Space grapevines tied to trellises 8 feet from each other in the rows. Decrease the space to 4 feet if you decide to train them onto an arbor.
