Apply 1/4 lb. of a 10-10-10 fertilizer to each plant starting in late April of the first year the vines are planted. Apply the fertilizer in an 18-inch circle around the stem of each plant. Repeat the process every six weeks through early July.
Increase the amount of fertilizer to 1/2 to 1 lb. the second year, but this time do not allow the fertilizer to come within 21 inches of the stems. Apply the fertilizer once in March, May and July.
Increase the fertilizer to 1 to 3 lbs. in the middle of March for each following year. Scatter the fertilizer beneath the trellis in a straight line, from one end to the other. Apply another 1 to 3 lbs. of fertilizer in the middle of June.
Observe the growth of the vines and take note of how long they grow each year. If the vines grow more than 4 feet in length, reduce the amount of fertilizer by 20 percent the following year. Continue to make slight adjustments to the amounts of fertilizer each year until the vines grow at a consistent and manageable rate.
