Remove any leafy canopy or obstructions that would prevent leaves from receiving sufficient sunlight. For ripening, the leaves, not the fruit, need sunshine to create the grape's sweet flavor.
Cover the grape clusters with large paper bags to keep them out of hungry birds' view. Tie the bags loosely at the cane using yarn or twine.
Remove the bag and taste some of the fruit. Taste is the best, most reliable measure for determining how ripe the grapes are. If the grapes have a fully developed flavor then pluck them from the cane.
