How to Plant a Grape Vine Trellis

Grapes can produce up to 20 lbs. of fruit per vine a year, according to the Ohio State University, making them a super productive garden plant. Grape vines grow best on a trellis since they need support and something to climb. Many varieties of grapes are adaptable to both warm and cold climates. They do best in full sun and well-drained soil. Grapes vines need time to grow before winter when freshly planted.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a site in your yard with full sun and well-drained soil. If you live in a cold climate, plant facing south. If you live in a warm climate, plant facing north.

    • 2

Push the trellis for the grape vine into the ground about half as deep as the trellis is tall. This will keep it from falling over from the weight of the grapes.

    • 3

Dig a hole for the grape vines as deep as the plant's root ball and two times as wide. Place the grape vine in the hole and spread the roots out. Fill the hole with soil.

    • 4

Water the grape vine well for seven minutes. Apply the water to the base of the grape vine.

    • 5

Cut the grape vine back to two main buds or vines with the pruners. These vines will grow into a cane and latch onto the trellis in time.
