How to Tie Grapes

Grapevines are a climbing plant, but they are limited in strength due to the large amount of fruit they have to bear. Create a trellis for the vines to grow on by erecting 10-foot stakes, 20 feet apart in the ground and stringing wire between them. This trellis provides a sturdy structure for vines to cling onto and grow. Vines on a trellis have the added benefit of receiving more sun and better ventilation.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a trellis either before planting the grapes or just after they are planted. Position the trellis over the grape plants so they can crawl up towards the trellis as they grow.

    • 2

Use pieces of twine to attach the vine to the trellis as it grows. Start tying the vine to the trellis when it is close to halfway up the structure. Use loose, overhand knots to keep the vine in position without strangling it.

    • 3

Tie up any loose grapevines as they continue to grow. Stray vines or new growth need to be tied as they appear throughout the season.
