About Bird Netting for Grapes

Birds are devastating to a ripening grape crop. Starlings, whose range covers the entire United States, are particularly problematic. Birds not only eat the grapes but they damage the fruit just by pecking into it. The best way to prevent bird damage to your grapes is to use netting. Netting is available in numerous sizes, weaves and price ranges.
  1. Weave

    • Netting for grapes comes in square, diamond and hexagonal weaves. Diamond mesh flexes and stretches more than the other weaves, making it easier to fit varying needs. Square mesh does not stretch and is appropriate for use with canopy framing; because it doesn't stretch, it is also easier to handle for backyard growers who are installing it by hand. Hex netting comes in smaller size mesh which makes it more versatile for use with other types of fruits as well as grapes.

    Size

    • Measure the length and width of your grapevines to choose the best size netting. The backyard grower should choose a size that is manageable for one or two people without requiring equipment to install. Overlap smaller lengths of netting to cover the area you need; clip the pieces together for easy removal. Netting typically comes in lengths as short as 20, 100 and 150 feet, and as long as 500 feet or more. Netting width is, on average, around 15 feet, with much wider widths available for commercial operations.

    Draping

    • Small-scale grape growers can simply drape the netting over the vines instead of installing support posts and line. However, the vines and tendrils will grow into the draped netting, making removal difficult. Removal is desirable for tending to the vines, applying pesticides, pruning and maintenance of support structure.

    Life Expectancy

    • Bird netting can last from five to 15 seasons, depending on the quality and care. The netting is subject to deterioration from the sun. UV-protected netting has a higher initial cost but its lifespan is several seasons longer before it weakens from sun damage. Remove, roll or fold and store netting under cover to lengthen its lifespan.
