How to Plant Garlic From a Sprouted Clove

You can grow garlic, a favorite seasoning of many cooks, from cloves that have already sprouted. You may not want to use sprouted garlic in your favorite dish, but you can plant the sprouted cloves to grow more of this savory vegetable. A fall planting time will give you the best garlic in the coming year, since it allows the garlic to develop a good root system, but you can plant garlic during other seasons, too.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant garlic during the fall, after the first frost, for best results. You can, however, plant garlic during the spring or summer.

    • 2

Rake the ground to loosen the soil where you want to plant the garlic.

    • 3

Break heads of garlic into individual cloves.

    • 4

Dig a hole 2 inches deep with your fingers and place the garlic right side up in the hole. Cover the bulb with soil. The top of the green shoots may show above the surface. Plant garlic cloves 6 to 8 inches apart.

    • 5

Cover the soil with a layer of mulch, 2 to 4 inches deep.

    • 6

Water heavily for the first week.
