Garlic Planting Depth

Garlic is a convenient addition to a cook's garden and is easy to grow. Fresh garlic adds an additional level of flavor and is a common fixture in many world cuisines. Garlic can be grown successfully outdoors or in an indoor container garden.
  1. Requirements

    • Garlic should be planted at a depth of 1/2 inch to 1 inch in rows at least 18 inches apart. Cloves should be spaced about 4 inches apart. Plant garlic in early spring for a late summer harvest.

    Fun Fact

    • Garlic seeds are uncommon, so garlic plants are actually grown from the cloves that make up garlic bulbs. Bulbs can contain 12 or more cloves, and each clove of garlic can grow into an individual plant.

    Considerations

    • Garlic grows best with plenty of fertilizer. Synthetic chemical fertilizers can be applied after planting, or compost and manure can be added to the soil.
