How to Care for Purple Campanula

Purple campanula, also known as bellflower, is an old-fashioned perennial bloomer that produces clusters of purple or bluish-purple blooms in early and mid-summer.The bell-shaped blooms grow atop sturdy, upright stems and bright green foliage. At maturity, purple campanula can reach heights of 1 to 2 feet. Once established, purple campanula is a durable, low-maintenance plant. Purple campanula is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture growing zones 3 to 8. Purple campanula can often be seen growing wild along ditches and roadsides.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear weeds from an area in full sunlight and moist well-drained soil. If you live in a climate with hot summers, plant purple campanula where the plant will be in the shade during the afternoons. Loosen the soil with a shovel and dig a hole to plant the campanula to the same depth it was in its nursery pot.

    • 2

Water purple campanula regularly and keep the soil evenly moist. Don't allow the soil to become either soggy or bone dry.

    • 3

Remove spent blooms to keep the plant blooming as long as possible. Cut the blooms for cut flower bouquets as often as you like.

    • 4

Cut the purple campanula plant down to the lowest sets of leaves with pruners in autumn when the plant is finished blooming and the foliage begins to look straggly.
