Can You Plant Sprouting Garlic in Your Garden?

Garlic bulbs begin to sprout when they are in storage for a long period and are not suitable for cooking use. Garlic that has sprouted can be planted to sprout anew, but there are advantages and disadvantages in doing so.
  1. Advantages

    • Planting garlic that has sprouted is an economical way to use the garlic. The individual cloves will create new heads of garlic, increasing your supply.

    Disadvantages

    • The garlic bulbs may not grow, particularly if you live in a climate that is different from the garlic's native area. The bulbs may grow in the garden, but the chances of success are better with indoor growing in a window box. If the quality of the original garlic is poor, the resulting garlic heads will also be poor.

    Method

    • Separate the garlic into individual gloves, leaving the papery husk intact. Fill a container with potting soil and plant the bulb sprouted end up 2 inches deep. If you are planting more than one bulb, space the bulbs 6 inches apart. Grow the garlic indoors in a sunny window for best results. Do not plant garlic bulbs that have a musty smell or are rotting.
