The Reddest Reblooming Irises

It used to be that bearded irises (Iris x germanica) bloomed in one glorious display in the spring to early summer, and that was it for the year. This has changed. Iris hybridizers have developed varieties of iris that bloom repeatedly, producing flower stalks at the regular time and again in summer and fall. More of these reblooming irises become available as iris breeders seek to extend blooming periods. Hybridizers have long sought a truly red iris, but most so-called red irises are purple-red or orange-red, and any red is uncommon in reblooming irises.
  1. About Reblooming Iris

    • In contrast to standard bearded irises, which grow in the spring, reblooming irises can grow all year long. In mild winter climates such as California you can come close to having almost continuously blooming irises. In cold winter areas, all irises go dormant for the winter. Rebloom isn't predictable, varying according to the area of the country, the particular cultivar, local climate conditions, and how well you care for the plants. Bearded irises are divided into classes based on height. All the classes contain reblooming varieties, but red-flowered rebloomers occur in only a few classes. Quite a few flowers have red areas somewhere on the flowers, as in variegatas with yellow standards, or upper petals, and reddish falls, which are the lower petals. Not many are completely red.

    Shorter Bearded Irises

    • The Border Bearded iris "Altar Fires" grows to 27 inches, with flaming rusty red flowers. It blooms early to mid season, and reblooms.

"Sheba's Flame" is a Border Bearded growing 23 inches tall with a roasted tomato red color, lightening to yellow in the heart of the flower. It blooms in midseason and reblooms. Both these irises are hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 10.

    Tall Bearded Iris

    • Tall bearded irises grow in USDA zones 3 through 10.

"Mt. Sinai Aflame" grows to 36 inches and has regular bloom early to mid season plus rebloom. The fragrant flower is garnet crimson with scarlet highlights.

"My Friend Jonathan" gives a strong red appearance, described as a bright fuchsia and brick blend. It grows to 36 inches; besides rebloom, it flowers in early and mid season.

Blooming early to mid season plus rebloom, "Red Mantle" reaches 35 inches tall and has dark carmine red petals with blackish veins in the falls.

"Taurus" displays light crimson red blooms from mid season to late with rebloom, and grows to 30 inches tall.

"Sheba's Queen" presents as dark red, described as a lightly ruffled garnet with a scarlet overwash. It blooms early to mid season plus rebloom.

    Other Irises

    • Other kinds of irises besides Bearded Irises are not the only irises that have reblooming varieties. Reddish-flowered, reblooming Siberian irises (Iris siberica) are "Ruby Ruby" and "Sultan's Ruby." "Ruby Ruby" is dark ruby red with a small yellow signal, 34 inches tall. It blooms mid season plus rebloom.

"Sultan's Ruby" has deep reddish-purple petals with a yellow signal, and grows to 29 inches tall. Siberian iris grow in USDA zones 3 through 9. The Louisiana iris (Iris fulva hybrid) "Red Echo" is a scarlet red that reaches 36 inches in height. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9.
