How to Transplant a Brugmansia Candida

Brugmansia Candida, also known as angel’s trumpet or angel trumpet, is a member of the nightshade family. Grown for its long, trumpet-like flowers, Brugmansia is native to South America, where it can reach heights of 10 to 20 feet. Hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 to 12, it can also be grown in USDA zones 8b to 9b but will die down to the ground during the winter and regrow from the ground in spring. Wear a long-sleeve shirt and gardening gloves when handling brugmansia. The oils of the foliage can irritate sensitive skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a site for planting where the brugmanisa will be at least a 3 to 4 feet away from other plants. Brugmansia do well in direct sunlight as long as they receive enough water. In very hot and dry locations, it is best to plant them where they will receive direct morning light and shade in the afternoon.

    • 2

Dig a hole 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Shovel the soil into a wheelbarrow and mix it with rich potting soil or compost and manure.

    • 3

Shovel in a foot of the amended soil into the base of the hole and water it with a hose until it is thoroughly moist.

    • 4

Remove the brugmansia from the pot by gently pushing on the sides of the pot while turning the plant on its side. Remove the root ball and place it in the hole. Make sure the base of the stem is level with the ground.

    • 5

Pour the mixed soil around the root ball of the plant and pat it down. Once the soil is level with the surrounding ground and the brugmansia is firmly in place, water the soil until it is thoroughly soaked. Brugmansia require moist soil and will need to be watered once a day for the first two to three weeks after planting. After the plant is established, water it three times each week.
