How to Cut Back & Cultivate an Iris Unguicularis

Iris unguicularis, known as the Algerian iris, blooms in October and the season may last until the following summer, depending upon the region in which it is growing. Flowers range from white to purple, although the most common variety is lavender. The flowers are sweetly scented although somewhat hidden within the plant's 24-inch tall foliage. Iris unguicularis thrives in Mediterranean climates and prefers to be left alone after it becomes established.

Instructions

    • 1

Water the Iris unguicularis to keep the soil moist in its first year. After that, do not water other than during periods of drought. It is not unusual for the gardener to water the plant once or twice during an entire summer. When you do water, do so to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 2

Fertilize the iris with 5-10-10 analysis fertilizer at half the rate suggested on the label. Provide two applications: one in the fall and then another after the plant finishes blooming.

    • 3

Cut back foliage to a height of 4 inches in the fall. This allows the iris flowers to unfold without being damaged and also allows the flowers to be seen better.

    • 4

Prune off dead foliage after the blooming season.
