When Does Zagreb Coreopsis Bloom?

Bloom Time

• Zagreb coreopsis blooms in early summer. Remove the dead flowers, though, and the plant may bloom again from midsummer to fall. Deadheading also prevents self-sowing, or the growth of new plants caused by dropped seeds. Pinch the thin, spindly stems back to ground level after the flowers bloom.

Growing Conditions

• Zagreb coreopsis blooms best when planted in full sun, although it tolerates partial shade better than most coreopsis. Water coreopsis frequently for the first few weeks as it becomes established. Established plants tolerate drought and may bloom better under slightly dry conditions. Prune the plant back if it looks straggly or if the middle starts to fall apart. Avoid overfertilizing Zagreb coreopsis, which can lead to fewer blossoms and floppy stems. A shovelful of manure in the spring or 1/2 cup of a balanced fertilizer is sufficient.

Uses

• Zagreb coreopsis makes a cheery addition to mixed perennial beds. Plant it near the front to middle of the bed or near small shrubs. It has a mounding form and feathery foliage that blends well with other plants. Zagreb coreopsis blooms longer than most perennials.

Other Varieties

• In addition to Zagreb coreopsis, try Moonbeam or Golden Shower. Both are verticillata, or threadleaf coreopsis, that grow 2 to 3 feet high and produce pale or medium yellow flowers. Try Coreopsis lanceolata varieties, as well. These plants have bright yellow to orange daisylike flowers that may have ragged edges or double petals. These plants have a more compact form than Verticillata coreopsis, but have a long blooming time, as well.
