How to Grow Angel Earrings Plants

The Angel Earrings Fuchsia is a heat-tolerant, hybrid variety of fuchsia developed by Suntory Collections. Fuchsias are native to subtropical America, including Mexico, Central America and South America. Varieties are also found in Tahiti and New Zealand. Most species of fuchsia prefer morning sun and dappled or full shade in the afternoon. However, according to Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery, Angel Earrings tolerate daytime temperatures of over 90 F, an unusual trait in fuchsias.

Instructions

    • 1

Press sphagnum moss into the basket.

    • 2

Mix three parts potting soil with one part perlite or vermiculite and one part compost. Blend well in a bucket, then add one part water. Continue mixing and adding water until the soil is completely moistened.

    • 3

Pour the moist soil into the hanging basket. Make a planting hole in the middle, slightly larger than the Angel Earrings' root ball.

    • 4

Slide the Angel Earrings fuchsia out of the grower's pot, carefully unwrapping any winding roots. Place in the planting hole and cover the roots with potting soil. Tamp gently and water thoroughly. Cover the soil with mulch, pulling it back 3 inches from the fuchsia's stem.

    • 5

Hang the Angel Earrings in a sheltered location where it will receive full sun or dappled shade.

    • 6

Water as soon as the top of the soil feels dry. Water daily in hot weather. Fuchsias do not like wet feet but require consistent moisture to survive hot summer days.

    • 7

Fertilize weekly with a balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 8

Monitor your fuchsias for pests such as aphids, spider mites and whiteflies.

    • 9

Take the basket inside in winter and hang in a cool, frost-free area such as a garage or well-lit basement. Water sparingly but do not allow the fuchsia to dry out. Pinch back or prune if necessary to remove leggy branches.
