Black and Blue salvia (Salvia guaranitica "Black and Blue") is considered a "sub-shrub," growing to 5 feet in height with a 2-foot spread. It blooms in mid-summer to mid-fall in deep blue flowers with black sepals. It is an easy plant to grow as long as the soil has proper drainage. Too much moisture at Black and Blue's roots may rot them. Grow Black and Blue salvia within zones 7 through 10 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Start the seeds indoors four weeks before the last frost.

1
Fill the germination container with moist soilless seed starting mix. Any container will suffice, as long as it has holes in the bottom for drainage.
-
2
Lay the Black and Blue salvia seeds on the surface of the soil and do not cover them. The seeds require light to germinate.

3
Place the heat mat in an area of bright but indirect sunlight and set the thermostat to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the pot on top of the mat.

4
Spray the seeds with water from a misting bottle to keep them moist during germination. If they dry out, they may not sprout. Black and Blue salvia seeds germinate within two weeks.
