How to Plant Henbane Hyoscyamus niger Seeds

Black henbane, also known as Hyoscyamus niger, produces large, white flowers lined with dark purple veins. The beauty of the flower is deceptive, though, since all parts of black henbane are poisonous. In some states, such as Nevada, California and Washington, black henbane is considered a noxious weed. Black henbane seeds grow in almost all soil conditions, but germination of the seeds can be sporadic.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak black henbane seeds in a glass of room-temperature water for 24 hours. Discard the seeds that float to the surface of the water. Also discard any immature, brown seeds or seeds that are smaller than the rest.

    • 2

Select a site for the plants after the soil in your garden has warmed, usually in May or later.

    • 3

Blend the black henbane seeds with a handful of fine soil. Scatter the mixture in rows spaced at least 2 feet apart. Press the seeds firmly into the soil.

    • 4

Water the black henbane seeds regularly until they germinate, but do not water so much that the soil becomes soggy. Seeds germinate sporadically, and some may not germinate at all until the following year.
