How to Grow Tiger Eye Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia is a genus of flowering plants commonly called black-eyed susan or coneflower. Many cultivars of rudbeckia exist, including one with bronze-tinted petals called Tiger Eye. The cultivar grows to a mature height of 24 inches and bears a profusion of large, daisy-like flowers with golden-orange petals and dark-brown centers, which differ from other types of rudbeckia in the double arrangement of the petals. Because Tiger Eye is a registered cultivar, seeds must be acquired from nurseries licensed to sell them, but they are very easy to grow at home and will last for several seasons once established.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the Rudbeckia "Tiger Eye" seeds six weeks before the last frost in spring. Fill a seedling tray with potting soil. Sow the seeds 1 inch apart. Press the seeds into the surface of the soil but do not bury them.

    • 2

Set the seedling tray near a south-facing window with bright, unfiltered light. Keep temperatures around the seedling tray between 70 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit at all times.

    • 3

Mist the soil with water until it is damp at a depth of 1/2 inch. Maintain moisture at that level during the entire germination process.

    • 4

Watch for germination in five to 10 days. Weed out the thinnest and weakest seedlings once they grow to 1 inch in height.

    • 5

Move the seedling tray outdoors once temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Place the seedling tray under dappled shade for five to seven days to acclimate the Tiger Eye seedlings to outdoor conditions.

    • 6

Transplant the seedlings into a sunny bed with loamy, well-draining soil once they set several pairs of permanent foliage. Plant them 18 to 24 inches apart. Keep the soil moist at a depth of 1 inch during the growing season.
