How to Make Daffodil Bulbs Root Indoors

Daffodils are among the first flowers to usher in spring with their cheerful, cup-and-saucer-shaped flowers and graceful foliage. They store all the energy needed to bloom each year within their bulb, and it takes just the right amount of chilling and warming to coax the flower stalks to emerge. Making daffodil bulbs root indoors is a passion for many gardeners since it brings the beauty of spring indoors a few weeks early. This straightforward project requires just a few materials to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-inch pots

Instructions

    • 1

Pot the daffodil bulbs between early October and December. Do not pot them earlier or later than that because they will not reliably bloom.

    • 2

Fill the bottom half of a 6-inch pot with a mix of equal measure potting soil, fine sand and milled peat moss. Shake the pot lightly to settle the soil evenly in the bottom of the pot.

    • 3

Plant up to four bulbs in the pot. Settle them onto the soil with the tapered end pointing upward.

    • 4

Add soil to the pot in small increments. Shake the pot vigorously while adding the soil to help it settle between the daffodil bulbs. Keep adding soil until the bottom two-thirds of the bulbs are buried but the pointed tips remain exposed.

    • 5

Water the pot of daffodil bulbs with 1 cup of water to thoroughly saturate the soil.

    • 6

Set the potted daffodil bulbs inside a refrigerator set to approximately 40 degrees F. Leave them in the cold for 13 weeks to mimic outdoor conditions.

    • 7

Remove the daffodil bulbs from the refrigerator after the chilling period. Place them near a bright window where temperatures stay above 60 degrees F. Watch for blooming in three to four weeks.
